Witham Valley Fenland Tour

Register your interest for the Fenland tour for the Lincolnshire Fens at Witham Valley. This area has some fascinating landscapes and landscape features including Bardney Abbey, Tupholme earthworks and earliest salt mounds. There will be talks on the sites of interest throughout the day.

Below is a tentative itinerary for the day, but this may change nearer the time. Register your interest for this event as spaces will be limited.

  • Meet at Bomber Command Centre then to Potterhanworth Booths, then across the valley on the Bardney causeway to remains of Bardney Abbey

  • From Bardney earthworks walk to nearby location to view landscape of the Witham Valley

  • Tupholme Abbey and look at Tupholme earthworks and setting

  • Stixwould earthworks

  • Kirkstead

  • Tattershall – Tattershall lordly hunting landscape

  • Lunch

  • Leave Tattershall drive across Witham Valley, including crossing fen islands of North and South Kyme to Garwick

  • Briefing of Garwick ‘productive site’ and setting then Drive to Swineshead Layby.

  • View earliest salt mounds and short briefing on early history of saltmaking in the area and brief history of Fenland Landscape

  • Drive from Swineshead Lay by via Donington and Quadring to Gosberton Lay by – View medieval salt mounds and Bicker Haven

  • Drive back to Bomber Command centre via North Kyme, then east side of Valley via Billinghay, Walcott, Metheringham Branston
