Following on from the very successful conference in the Autumn, run jointly by the Society for Landscape Studies and Sussex Archaeological Society, which attracted an audience of almost 190, we are offering a weekend on the same theme. Prof. Brian Short and Dr Sue Berry will draw upon their own personal research to show how the influences on rural landscapes change and how landscapes respond. Prof. Short will explore issues and impacts in Ashdown Forest and Dr Berry will look at an area on the Downs around Glynde where there is a rich range of downland themes.
Both sessions will begin with a morning in Lewes where key points will be introduced and the contribution of any relevant archives explained. After lunch there will be a long afternoon in the chosen spots. Both days will begin in Lewes at 10a.m. and end there at 1p.m. The afternoon sessions will begin at 2.30 and end at 5.30p.m. The break in-between is for lunch and to get to the destination. The fee will include a handbook with a programme to assist with the weekend. In it we shall encourage participants to think about the similarities and differences between these areas, not only their geology and geography but also how, over time, people have influenced them.
Members of the Society for Landscape Studies are welcome to book for the Society’s event. Booking priority will be given to those who book for both days. You will need to be able to cope with some fairly steep slopes on the Downs and very uneven surfaces and will need wind/waterproof tops and comfortable walking shoes suitable for wet, slippery surfaces.
The fee for the whole weekend is £30 and the numbers limited to 26. One day is £15 and both charges will also include the handbook for the weekend. Confirmation will be sent by email wherever possible. To receive a confirmation by post, please include s.a.e. Cheques should be payable to the Sussex Archaeological Society and sent to:
